a bill has been passed by congress in response to the recent scandals involving arlington national cemetery and the subsequent army investigatory report referred to in my previous post - read it here
S.3860 - A bill to require reports on the management of Arlington National Cemetery
Directs the Secretary of the Army to submit to the congressional defense, homeland security, and veterans committees an accounting of the gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery, including, among other things, whether such gravesites are correctly identified, labeled, and occupied.
Requires the Comptroller General to report to such committees on the management and oversight of burial operations contracts at such Cemetery.
Directs the Secretary of the Army to submit to the appropriate congressional committees biennial reports on the execution of and compliance with Army Directive 2010-04, Enhancing the Operations and Oversight of the Army National Cemeteries Program.
Bill Summary & Status
in the house of representatives the final roll call vote was 407 yeas and 3 nays... who in hell would vote nay!?!
well, they were all republicans (of course) and stunningly typical in the hypocrisy of their votes
Rep. Ted Poe (texas - 2nd district)
in this article he advocates honouring america's oldest surviving world war one veteran frank buckel with full military burial at Arlington Cemetery upon his death. yes... but ensuring his grave is properly marked must not be an intrinsic part of that honor. hmmm.
Rep. Todd Tiahrt (kansas - 4th district)
he lost his bid for reelection in november so is free to vote however he wants without worrying about constituant protestations. if this is how he views the importance of honouring our nation's war dead then what was getting a flag in braille flown at arlington in support of blind veterans all about?
Rep. CW Bill Young (florida - 10th district)
here's a letter he wrote calling for congressional investigation of the situation at arlington:
"There is no room for error in this mission and the level of negligence is almost beyond comprehension. My sympathies for the families are only matched by my level of anger at those responsible for allowing these problems to occur." |
